New streets design to help reduce traffic crashes in cities

A new guide for redesigning streets has been launched in a move aimed at reducing traffic fatalities in cities globally.

The Global Street Design Guide provides for safety of pedestrians and other vulnerable road users in cities.

The first-ever worldwide standard guide for designing city streets prioritizes safety of pedestrians and improving transit and mobility in urban centres.

A statement released by the National Association of City Transport (NACTO) on October 13, 2016 states that the guide shows how to redesign cites to put people first.

The guide will help reduce traffic dangers by offering planners with models that shift from designing cities for vehicle movement to include safety of all users.

“From moving more people with transit lanes to dedicating space for vibrant economic activity like street vendors, this new global toolkit is applicable to a variety of contexts worldwide,” the statement read.

It also considers climate change by offering solution to minimize negative environmental impact.

The guide, released by NACTO and Global Designing Cities Initiatives, has 21 street typologies and 50 unique street and intersection designs.
